Establishment of Mathadi Hospital
1. Background and Establishment
Under Section 6(1) of the Maharashtra Mathadi, Hamal and Other Manual Workers (Regulation of Employment and Welfare) Act, 1969, various Mathadi Boards were established. Under the welfare scheme of these boards, Mathadi Hospital was founded to provide medical facilities to Mathadi workers and their families. Mathadi Hospital (Trust) is a welfare project of the Mathadi Boards, registered with the Charity Commissioner under Registration No. E-8768-B.
A worker earning a living through physical labor—carrying loads on the head, shoulders, or back—is known as a "Mathadi Worker". This manual labor is their sole means of livelihood. Late MLA Annasaheb Patil, a visionary leader and tireless fighter with immense compassion for these load-carrying workers, was their staunch advocate and pioneer of the Mathadi Act. Recognizing this vital need, he partnered with like-minded medical visionary Dr. K. R. Toraskar in 1976 to start a clinic in the Masjid Bunder area of Mumbai.
Over time, this clinic evolved into a polyclinic and subsequently into a hospital. Following the relocation of the wholesale markets from Masjid to Vashi, a well-equipped 99-bed hospital facility was constructed at Koparkhairane.
