Whether it is the implementation of labour laws or the introduction of innovative and forward-thinking schemes for the upliftment of workers, Maharashtra has emerged as a model state for others to follow. The Labour Department has played a vital role in the state's overall development through its visionary goals and policies.

The labour sector has significantly contributed to Maharashtra’s comprehensive progress, aligning closely with its progressive objectives. Within the labour movement, industrial relations are considered the most fundamental and crucial element. The Labour Department has prioritized creating a conducive environment for both employers and trade unions—strengthening industrial relations, safeguarding workers’ rights, and fostering industrial harmony.

The Labour Department is responsible for formulating and implementing labour laws in Maharashtra. It also oversees the prevention and resolution of industrial disputes, and promotes industrial safety, health, and welfare for workers in enterprises under its jurisdiction. The Department is headquartered at Mantralaya, Mumbai, and is led by the Hon’ble Minister for Labour. The Principal Secretary (Labour) serves as the administrative head of the Department.
